Good Morning: Don’t Get In Your Own Way

“And now let us welcome the New Year Full of things that have never been.
~Rainer Marie Rilke

Good morning!

For many, today is a day of returning to work, marking the official “end” of the holiday season as we think about taking down trees, packing up decorations and “getting a move on in 2011.” But let us hold onto the wonder of the holiday season and the wonderful gift of opportunity that a New Year brings.

As I think about the holidays, I think that I am going to give a little more weight to the New Year in the future. Something about that fresh palette of days fills me with a child-like joy usually reserved for young children on Christmas Eve. For I know that even in the dark times, life is always magical. Although my years, like yours, are a compilation of the good, the not-so-good, the magical and the dark — I know that every day holds gifts and opportunities. The New Year reminds us of that hope and opportunity. It reminds us that there is always a new beginning; we can always make a fresh start.

Time doesn’t stand in our way, we do. We can set a new resolution every midnight; we can greet each day with hope and opportunity. Nothing is stopping us from experiencing child-like wonder every day – except our own perceptions. We can change our perceptions, we can take control and change our lives.

Your Turn:
Spend a moment or two reflection on these two questions: What could you possibly lose by treating each day as a gift with childlike wonder? What might you gain?

Your Affirmation:
In 2011, I will not stand in my own way. In 2011, I realize true joy in my life.

And as always, don’t forget to start your day with a heartfelt: “Something great is going to happen today… I can’t wait to see what it is!”

And when ending your day ask yourself: “What is one more thing I can do to make today matter?”
